Art & Racing
A true departure from the standard art documentary, Art & Racing is a lively trek through the life of a uniquely American artist.
The film intercuts between two apparently distinct worlds: the international network of galleries, museums, and private collections where Scarpitta’s artwork circulates, and a tiny dirt-racing track in rural Pennsylvania where a different sort of craft is practiced. Told with humor, grace, and wit, Scarpitta’s story offers a rare glimpse of both the artistic process and the human spirit. Archetypical themes of passage, ritual, birth, and death are articulated both in his paintings and in the procession of the race, allowing the viewer insight into the often impenetrable world of artistic creation.
